Preventionof Mother-to- Child Transmission of HIV in Rowanda.

With the Rowandan genocide of 1994, women were repeatedly raped as a weapon of war. The effects of the war still deeply affect the African Nation. In addition to the terrible trauma inflicted on the victims of rape many contracted STD’s, half became HIV positive. Women who are HIV positive will be given prenatal and obstetrical care, including antiviral medications during pregnancy and delivery that prevent the transmission of the virus to the child. After birth they will receive counseling and baby formula to use in place of breast milk.

Safe Cities for Women Project in Guatemala City, Guatemala and San Salvador, El Salvador.

As Latin America becomes increasingly urbanized, violence is escalating at an alarming rate. As conditions worsen and violence increases, women are especially vulnerable to becoming victims due to a traditionally subordinate role in Latin America society. UNIFEM  will work with established women’s organizations in partnership with local authorities in order to develop and implement  policies on urban violence that specifically address the needs of women and the prevalence of violence against women in this environment.

Reduction of Obstetric Fistula in Liberia

During the fifteen years of civil wars, the healthcare system was all but destroyed. The rate of maternal mortality and morbidity increased dramatically. The cruelest complication is an obstetric fistula, which literally is a hole in the birth canal. Obstetric fistula has been all but eliminated in developed nations. Obstetric fistulas are a highly treatable condition. With properly trained surgeons, well-equipped facilities and the necessary aftercare, the treatment of uncomplicated fistula is 90% success rate. Specialty training will be offered to local doctors, raising the quality of care.
